Mild winter won’t save North Beach cottages

CHATHAM – This surprisingly mild winter has meant a reprieve for the 11 cottages on North Beach Island. The island, which split off from the barrier beach in 2007, has an annual erosion rate of 80 feet on the ocean side, so the lack of stormy weather has been welcomed by the seasonal tenants and owners of those cottages.
But the Cape Cod National Seashore, which owns five of the cottages, wants to demolish them before they are washed away in a storm, possibly creating a marine hazard and a potentially expensive cleanup. The five cottages were padlocked last month and are slated for demolition by the end of April. Sunday was the deadline for tenants to remove personal belongings.
