King tides offer a glimpse of future sea level rise

Extra high tides on Wednesday and Thursday could provide a glimpse of the future. An extra foot of water – currently caused by astronomical events several times a year – could be the norm as soon as 2050. So grab your cameras, snap some photos and send them my way.


From his window in Broad Channel, Queens, Dan Mundy sees the tides of Jamaica Bay swing from high to low, the pendulum of a celestial clock. “Right now, 10 after 1 in the afternoon, it is 25 minutes from dead-low tide,” he said on Tuesday.
