Don’t like anchovies? Better learn to.

Dr. Villy Christensen is making a splash here at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science with a new report documenting a major shift in the world’s fish populations over the course of the past century – a two-thirds decline in the amount of large, predatory fish in the ocean and a corresponding doubling of small fish. As a possible solution, Christensen suggests (among other things) “eating through the food chain” rather than fishing our way down it. That means putting fish like herring, sardines, and anchovies onto our plates rather than into the mouths of farmed salmon. If the current trend continues, Christensen said they may be about all that’s left in 2050. Personally, I’ve never been a big anchovy fan. More of a cod, salmon, tuna kind of girl. Guess I’ll have to work on that.

Ever tried marinated anchovies (boquerones)? Much tastier than traditional. Last I checked Oregon was the only place with locally caught and processed boquerones. Delicioso!

I meant the only *U.S. state*! Not the only place, duh!

Next time I’m in Portland, I’ll look those up. Always game for a new seafood adventure :)
